Discover Georgian Cheese Boat

If you're looking to explore an authentic, mouth-watering dish that will transport your taste buds straight to Georgia, you can't miss the Georgian Cheese Boat. This beloved dish, known for its unique shape and delightful flavors, is a must-try at any restaurant specializing in Georgian cuisine. One such place that brings this dish to life in the heart of San Francisco is located at 1224 Grant Ave, San Francisco, CA 94133, United States. The restaurant serves up a delightful twist on traditional Georgian comfort food, making it a local favorite.

The Georgian Cheese Boat, or "Khachapuri," is a warm, cheesy, boat-shaped bread stuffed with a blend of cheeses and often topped with an egg in the center. This dish is as comforting as it sounds - cheesy, warm, and satisfying, with a soft, doughy crust that complements the rich filling perfectly. The cheese used in a classic Georgian Cheese Boat often includes sulguni, a semi-soft cheese that offers a slightly tangy flavor, and imeruli, which is milder and creamier. Together, these cheeses melt beautifully, creating an irresistible combination.

When you walk into this cozy San Francisco spot, the aroma of freshly baked bread fills the air, making you instantly hungry. The Georgian Cheese Boat is always prepared to perfection - golden, crispy edges with a soft, fluffy interior. The egg yolk in the middle provides an additional creamy texture that melds wonderfully with the warm, stretchy cheese. You can choose to scoop up the cheese with pieces of the boat’s bread or mix it all together into a gooey, cheesy mess.

Many visitors who've experienced this dish at the restaurant rave about how it brings a piece of Georgian culture right to their plates. One of the standout features of this diner is its ability to stay true to the traditional flavors while offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere for both newcomers and regulars. Their menu doesn’t stop at just the Georgian Cheese Boat. They offer a variety of other traditional dishes like lamb khinkali (dumplings) and rich, flavorful stews, each brimming with the same authenticity.

What’s even better is the ability to pair your Georgian Cheese Boat with a refreshing drink from their selection of wines and local beverages. Georgia is renowned for its wine, and the restaurant does an excellent job of offering selections that complement the hearty, cheesy dish. The wine list features both local and international choices, giving diners the perfect beverage to balance the richness of the meal.

For those unfamiliar with Georgian cuisine, the Georgian Cheese Boat is an ideal introduction. It’s a great way to understand the unique flavors and textures that define this Central Asian culinary tradition. The balance of bread, cheese, and egg is something that sets it apart from more commonly known European comfort foods, offering an experience that feels both familiar and exciting at the same time.

One of the best parts of dining at this restaurant is its location. Situated in San Francisco’s iconic neighborhood, the area is full of charm and history. After enjoying your Georgian Cheese Boat, you can stroll through the surrounding streets, taking in the local culture and architecture, making it a perfect spot for a day out with friends or family.

Customer reviews often highlight the friendly and knowledgeable staff, who are always eager to explain the ingredients and history of each dish. It's clear that the restaurant is passionate about sharing the authentic flavors of Georgia, and their attention to detail in preparing each meal speaks volumes. For anyone in San Francisco, it's a great place to experience something different while staying close to the familiar comforts of good food.

  • Amazing Georgian Restaurant! I’m from Russia, and I have to say-Georgian cuisine completely won me over! The khinkali were absolutely incredible: juicy, fresh, and authentic. The wine was delicious, and the uncle who served us was extremely friendly, warm, and welcoming. The whole atmosphere felt very kind and genuine. Everything was polite, fast, and super tasty. I definitely recommend visiting this restaurant-you’ll enjoy every moment!

  • I was pleasantly surprised to discover authentic Georgian food right here in San Francisco! I tried the famous Georgian cheeseboat (khachapuri), and it was absolutely fantastic — loaded with rich, gooey cheese and full of flavor. I paired it with a fresh Georgian-style salad, which was crisp, vibrant, and perfectly balanced. Everything I ordered was delicious and tasted truly authentic. On top of that, the customer service was outstanding — friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Definitely a spot worth coming back to!

  • We found this Georgian cheese boat restaurant and were very excited to visit. We gathered few friends and had a very fun nice dinner. It was so much fun trying so many different plates of food. Some of the food was a bit salty but overall it was delicious, and service was excellent. Definitely will visit again.

  • I got to watch my khinkali made right in front of me. It was my first time having it and I am in love. I also had the veggie combo platter and some freshly baked bread, (baked literally to order). I was there yesterday and I am going back tonight to have more before I leave San Francisco in the morning!

  • Cheese Boat is a cozy little gem in San Francisco serving up truly authentic Georgian cuisine. Every dish we tried was excellent — full of bold, comforting flavors that instantly transported us. We ended up sharing a generous spread of appetizers because it was impossible to choose just one. The stuffed dumplings were tender and flavorful, the khachapuri was everything you'd hope for (cheesy, rich, and satisfying), and the pkhali was wonderful. The space itself is small and inviting — perfect for a relaxed evening with friends. And the Georgian pear soda was the perfect finishing touch, light and refreshing for a hearty meal. If you’re curious about Georgian food or already a fan, Cheese Boat is definitely worth the visit.

  • Food takes a while because it's freshly handmade. A bit on the pricey side, but hollllllyyyy cheese is it delicious. Highly recommend the combo platter to try a little bit of everything. Getting one main side would have been too much of the same thing. We got the cheese boat with an egg and it was delicious. The mushrooms? Heavenly. All of it was very light yet filling. Perfect for a walk around Chinatown! The pear drink and the compote drinks paired p e r f e c t l y with everything. We were stuffed by the end of it and forgot we ordered the dessert to try. The thick slice looked scary dense. I tell ya what, it was perfect. Light and flaky, more like a crumbly pastry. The perfect top to an incredible meal.

  • We had an amazing experience at this Georgian restaurant! The khinkali with lamb, and beef were incredibly delicious — full of flavor and perfectly cooked. The Georgian salad was fresh and tasty, and the chicken kebab was especially good. The red wine was excellent and paired perfectly with the food. Our server was extremely polite, attentive, and always made sure we had everything we needed. He checked on us at the right moments, and all the dishes came out very quickly. Overall, everything was fantastic — great food, great service, great atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back!

  • I love Georgian food, and this place did not disappoint. The menu is huge, so of course we tried a little bit of everything—no regrets. The classic khachapuri? Absolutely divine. Honestly, I’m still thinking about it. I’ll definitely be back for round two.
